Everything Everywhere All At Once continues to rack up the recognition as awards season ramps up. The Critics Choice Awards has released its list of nominees, and the A24 film nabbed 14 nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actress (both Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu), and Best Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, a.k.a. Daniels), among others.

It’s undoubtedly been a very good year for auteur filmmakers. Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fablemans took a tidy 11 nominations, including three for the auteur as director, producer, and co-writer. Damien Chazelle’s Babylon received 10 nods, including one for Margot Robbie as Best Actress, and Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees Of Inisherin received nine, with acting nods for both Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.
Early awards season fanfare continues to be great advertisement for the imminent release of Avatar: The Way Of Water, which was granted six nominations from the Critics Choice Association. That includes Best Picture, Best Director for James Cameron, Best Cinematography (Russell Carpenter), Best Production Design (Dylan Cole, Ben Procter, Vanessa Cole), Best Editing (Stephen Rivkin, David Brenner, John Refoua, James Cameron), and Best Visual Effects.

The CCA improved upon the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in at least one regard: two out of the ten filmmakers nominated for Best Director are women. That’s Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King and Sarah Polley for Women Talking. Charlotte Wells missed out on a nomination for her critically acclaimed debut feature Aftersun, but was recognized as a writer in the Best Original Screenplay category. (Stars Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio are also nominated.)

The 2023 Critics Choice Awards, hosted by Chelsea Handler, will air on The CW on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at 7 P.M. ET. Scroll on for the full list of nominees.
